The following is a partial transcript of the podcast. Hello again everyone and welcome back to Page Turn, the Largo Public Library Podcast. This is Episode Six. In today’s Library Tidbit we focused on some library displays, including being prepared for a hurricane, after all it was this time last year that we were all gearing up to face Hurricane Irma. Also don’t forget to check out the Friend’s of the Largo Library Book Sale! It runs September 26th – 29th. Before that we have Reader’s Advisory: The Spanish Language Book Review begins at 8:33 and ends at 10:56 The English Language Transcript can be found below. The Reader’s Advisory for Episode Six is Japanese Soul Cooking: Ramen Tonkatsu, Tempura, and more from the Streets and Kitchens of Tokyo and Beyond by Tadashi Ono. If you like Japanese Soul Cooking you should also check out: Sirocco: Fabulous Flavours from the East by Sabrina Ghayour; Every Grain of Rice by Fuchsia Dunlop; and A Taste of Latin America by Patricia Cartin. Listen to podcast for a full review of these books. My personal favorite Goodreads list Japanese Soul Cooking is on is: "Around the World in Cookbooks". *Page Turn Sound* Today’s Library tidbit comes to us from Debbie. Debbie wears many hats here at the library, working in circulation, damages, and on the display committee. Debbie came on to the podcast today to talk to us about our library displays which for the month of September are about Hurricane Preparedness, our Welcome Week and Issues that Matter: Food Drive. Even though this year hasn’t been as exciting as last year, for which we are all grateful, it’s still important to prepare your home for hurricane season. Below are some links that Debbie referred to on how to prepare and what you will need should a hurricane strike. But remember should the worst happen, as long as we are able to, the Largo Public Library will be available to help you find needed forms, give you a place to come that is out of the heat and where you can charge devices, and is full of free entertainment. My name is Victor and I am the Outreach librarian at Largo Public Library. Today I am going to talk about Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. A Synopsis: Simon Snow is considered the most powerful magician in the world. He is seventeen years old and he is the Chosen One, the only one who can save the world. He and his friends study at Watford, a school of magic. My Opinion: Rainbow Rowell has had a lot of success recently in young adult literature. I’ve read other books of hers, Fangirl and Attachments, and loved them. Her stories are not too complicated, but they have something that catches you and makes you want to stay in those worlds. Rowell’s books are great for escaping reality and the problems of everyday life. Unlike Attachments and Fangirl, Carry On is a fantasy novel. It is related to Fangirl, though. The characters in Carry On are the same characters that Cath obsesses over in Fangirl. I like this relationship between the two books. A lot of Carry On seems based on the Harry Potter novels and I thought Rowell was successful in referencing Harry Potter while also creating a world of magic that is very different. Simon Snow is clearly Harry Potter, although this time, despite being the Chosen One, Simon cannot control his magic and everyone expects something from him that he cannot give them. Penelope could be the Hermione of this book. She is as intelligent and there is no spell that she can’t perform. The Sorcerer is Dumbledore and Baz, Simon’s roommate, is a type of Draco Malfoy. None of these are perfect 1-to-1 parallels and readers will find differences when they read the books. In short, although in some parts the narration is quite heavy, and I think it could have been a considerably shorter book, I like the plot very much and I love the writing style of Rainbow Rowell. Overall Carry On left me with a good taste in my mouth. Until the next edition of Book Traveler! Thanks everyone for listening.
